Timing is Everything for Effective Mesquite Control

Mesquite is one of the toughest and most invasive brush species across South-Central Texas. While it can provide some benefits to wildlife, its aggressive growth quickly outcompetes more desirable vegetation, reducing forage production for livestock and interfering with land management. Effective control of mesquite isn’t just about what herbicides you use—it’s about when you apply them.

The Best Time to Control Mesquite

For optimal results, the best time to control mesquite with foliar-applied herbicides is late spring to mid-summer, when the leaves are mature, healthy, and dark green. This stage ensures maximum herbicide uptake through the leaves. By late summer, insect damage or other stress factors can compromise leaf health, significantly reducing the effectiveness of treatments. As a general rule, if 25% or more of the leaves are damaged, it’s best to postpone herbicide applications.

Soil temperature is another critical factor. For effective control, soil at a 12-inch depth should reach 75°F before beginning treatments—typically about 42 days after bud break. It’s also important to avoid applying herbicides during mesquite bean elongation, as the plant's resources are focused on seed production rather than root uptake. For South Texas, the cut-off for foliar spraying is usually toward the end of July.

Precision Application with Our Spray Drones

Proper timing and herbicide selection are crucial, but precision application is the final piece of the puzzle. That’s where we come in. At Aerial Vegetation & Imagery Solutions, our advanced spray drones can apply both granular and liquid herbicides with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring even coverage and minimizing waste. Our technology allows us to treat large areas quickly while targeting individual plants with precision—perfect for dealing with widespread mesquite infestations.
